8 Essential Tips to Keep your Room clean and Relaxing This Summer

Jul. 14, 2024 / All Things Life

Hey, my lovely friends! At the end of a busy summer day, one of my favorite things is to spend some time relaxing and unwinding in my room. However, when my room is getting messy, it’s less relaxing because I want to get rid of the mess instead of reading or journaling. It doesn’t have to be like that, though! Today I’m sharing some of my favorite ways to keep your room tidy and refreshing, so you’ll want to spend time there.

make your bed every morning

This is one of the easiest things on this list, and one that makes such a difference. Make your bed as soon as you get up in the morning, and soon it’ll become a habit. Straighten the covers and fluff up and position the pillows. When I go in my room and see the neatly made bed, it makes me so happy. It seems like such a little thing, but it’s a good habit to have.

find some organization bins

You know all of those letters, souvenirs, sports awards, and miscellaneous things you can’t throw away? You can keep them handy without having them spread all over your desk and dresser. These storage bins from Walmart are exactly what I have. I love how sturdy they are and all the colors you can choose from. I have them on the bottom shelf of my bookcase to store things like photos, letters, notebooks, and other things I want accessible. But: don’t let these become a catch-all for everything. Only keep important items in here, not things that should be thrown away.

Spend 5-10 Minutes picking up Every Morning or Evening

Here’s the thing: leaving all the cleaning and tidying for all at once can be so overwhelming. Rather than trying to do it all at once and getting frustrated, pick up a little bit every day. Not only will that make your tidying go faster, but it also eliminates most of the clutter, keeping your room tidier longer! I like to spend 10 minutes putting things away before I go to bed. I put away everything I’ve used during the day or brought up to be put away. Then in the morning, I wake up to a neat room and can start my day right away.

Make a Weekly Cleaning List

I find it so much easier to keep my room clean and make cleaning faster if I have a list of things that need to be done. You could decide to do all the cleaning on one day or do one or two things every day. For example, you could have a list that looks like this:

  • Monday – vacuum
  • Tuesday – dust
  • Wednesday – change sheets/clear off dresser top
  • Thursday – mop/swiffer floor
  • Friday – cobwebs
  • Saturday – catch up day

However you decide to do it, make it work for you and your schedule.

eliminate any clutter

Between dresser, nightstands, and bookshelves, there’s plenty of space to put things. On one hand, that’s great, but it can also be a bad thing if things begin to accumulate. Every once in a while, go over all the spaces in your room that tend to collect stuff. Get rid of what you can and give everything else a home. Keeping your space clutter-free goes a long way in keeping your room looking nice and fresh.

Bring in Some Plants

Plants add a nice finishing touch to a room. Whether you choose a brightly flowered geranium or the classic spider plant, it’s nice to have a pop of color or interest somewhere. Air plants not only look pretty, but they help to freshen the air a little bit. When picking a plant, keep in mind the lighting situation and how much time you want to spend caring for it. I’ve brought home a couple plants that then died because I forgot to water them. Don’t do that!

Put Laundry Away Right Away

This could probably go under the clutter heading, but I think it deserves its own section. It’s easy to leave the laundry for another time, especially if I’m in a hurry. But I timed myself once while putting away a basket of laundry, and it took about five minutes! Also, make sure the laundry is going in its proper spot neatly. Don’t let your dresser drawers or closet get messy just because they’re hidden.

“Air plants not only look pretty, but they help to purify the air.” — Actually, that last part is likely not true. You can check this article by HouseFresh for a quick summary of the scientific investigation of plants’ effects on air purity: https://housefresh.com/do-plants-clean-the-air/ .
House plants do tend to reduce CO2 however, and do tend to improve health, so they are not without benefit; just saying that purification is not really a key feature of plants.
