Early Mornings, Running, and Psychology || Come Live a Day in the Life with Me!

Nov. 18, 2024 / All Things Fun

Hello, my lovely friends! Today I’m super excited to share about what a typical day in my life looks like. As a high school senior working part time, my days tend to be very full. I like a busy schedule though; it’s a great feeling being able to check things off my list. I’ve finally found a consistent daily routine that keeps me on track and leaves me feeling productive at the end of the day.

My day starts around 6 AM. I set three different alarms so that it’s harder to just hit snooze and go back to sleep ๐Ÿ˜† The first thing I do in the morning is my Bible study; I’m currently doing a study of Ruth. Everything I need for Bible study (Bible, notebook, pens, prayer journal) are all together by my bed.

I’ll be completely honest, daily quiet time wasn’t something I did consistently until recently. But now, I miss it if I skip a morning. If you’re trying to get back into a habit of reading your Bible every day, pick a book of the Bible and find a Bible study to go with it! This is a habit that’s so important to cultivate.

Once I finish my quiet time, I get dressed and clean my room BEFORE I go downstairs. One reason is because once I leave, I don’t come back to my room until late at night. If I didn’t tidy it up in the morning, chaos would reign XD Another reason is because I don’t like clutter and messy rooms, and starting the day with a clean room is very satisfying.

A new “challenge” I gave myself (it’s not exactly a challenge, more like something to be intentional about) is making a good breakfast for myself every morning. Some mornings are harder than others but eating real food for breakfast while doing my Duolingo is my favorite part of the day. There’s something about eating yummy, healthy food in the morning that makes it well worth the effort AND makes choosing good options easier for the rest of the day.

If you’re looking for easy but yummy breakfast recipes (and lots of others, too!) I’d recommend Ashley Hetherington’s new cookbook. I’ve tried several of her recipes and they’re amazing.

After breakfast, it’s time for school! I intentionally kept my courseload light this year with only four classes, and I’ve enjoyed having some extra time to spend on other hobbies. I dedicate mornings to listening to lectures and working on assignments. My psychology class is half over and is one of the easiest classes I’ve ever taken. I submitted my first paper last week and already started working on the next one!

Psychology typically takes about an hour and a half by the time I do all the reading and watch the lecture for the day. Science and math take hardly any time at all. I didn’t need to do science, but I wanted to do a high school level astronomy before graduation. I am using Apologia’s curriculum and have enjoyed learning more about the planets and stars. Fun fact: did you know that Mercury is not the hottest planet, even though it’s closest to the sun? Venus is the planet with all the heat, thanks to its atmosphere.

As for math, I’m just doing a review course of essentially all the math concepts I’ve ever learned. Thankfully, it only takes about 15 minutes to do the review every day.

This year will be the second year I’ve attempted a Thanksgiving Day 5K, so the past few months have been full of training and telling myself that I do actually like running. (I sort of do, but running and I have a love-hate relationship). Anyway, I often go for a run either before or after lunch, depending on the day. Thanks to my one knee that been giving me issues, I only go running three days a week: Monday is my easy run, Wednesday is an interval run, and Friday is my long run. I also do three days of strength/cross training and one complete rest day.

During my run, I sometimes listen to music, but most days I just listen to silence ๐Ÿ˜† I live in a small town, and I like to run loops through the neighborhood. I know exactly where the half mile and mile marks are, so I just run back and forth until I reach my distance goal. (Here’s a tip: when you go for a run, pick either a distance or time goal and don’t worry about the other factor. This is especially important for beginner runners or girlies like me who are trying to get back into it and actually have fun.)

When I get back from my run (or finish my workout) it’s time for lunch. This is also my time for checking Instagram; I try not to be on social media too much in the morning. It gives me something to look forward to while eating lunch.

After lunch I practice piano before I have to leave for work. I just had my senior recital last Sunday, so I’ll start working on new music this Monday.

The afternoon is where my schedule varies. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday I work 2-6. On those days, I leave around 1:30 and don’t get home until 6:30 or so. When I get home, we have dinner together as a family. The rest of the evening is my time for reading, knitting (I’ve been working on a blanket for almost two years, we’ll see if I finish it anytime soon), and really anything creative. Sometimes I’ll decide to bake something at 7:30, and I’ll spend the rest of the evening in the kitchen.

I am a night owl; I like being up late when everyone else is in bed and the house is quiet. However, being up late and getting up early don’t exactly go together ๐Ÿ˜… Friday nights are when I’ll stay up late because I can sleep in on Saturdays. Other nights I’m in my room by 9:30 or 10:00. Sometimes I’ll read for a while, or I’ll turn off the light right away. I do make an effort to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.

And that’s my day in a nutshell! Most days are a lot the same, but every once in a while, something happens that completely throw off my schedule. I’ve learned to just roll with it though; it’s those unexpected changes that keep life interesting.

let’s chat!

what does a typical day look like for you? are you a morning person or a night owl? do you prefer routine or spontaneity?
